Hemingway And Hadley

A Moveable Feast is not just about Hemingway learning to perfect his style of writing & living the Bohemian life - it is a love story about his first wife, Hadley.
He was married four times and had many affairs, but his "book of sketches" is saturated with sketches of Hadley and the things that they did together.
In this 1922 photo they are in Chamby, Switzerland, a favorite spot for them in the winter.
A photo of Hadley from an older post

Nice photo! I don't think it's from Paris (too much snow!), maybe from one of their trips...Where did the used to vacation? Switzerland?
Anyway, I like the fact that he treated her like a partner in life.

I added an update to my post today, in case you are unfamiliar with a caged lanai.

Hello Isabella, I'll have to track down some information on this photo. I think it is a US shot - probably Michigan just before they left for Paris in 1921.
If not it is an early shot in Europe; in Switzerland or Austria.

Did Hemingway remarry because Hadley died or because they divorced? I mean, if he was going around having affairs behind her back, that (to me) doesn't spell LOVE.

Buuuuuut that could be me. Or it could be more complicated. Or they could've broken it off for a different reason. Or something.

I enlarged it and it's a really beautiful and tender photo. Very interesting as usual everything is concerning.

The house in Key west had personal ouches of his third wife, Pauline all over the place .

Thanks Fabrizio, and Ame, and Josy for visiting

    Hello Moi,
Yes the breakup with Hadley was pretty much the end of the Paris "adventure." The '30s brought Key West & a rocky relationship with Pauline.

Mariel, Carlos? That's a port city in Cuba.........:)
What did they do, Shionge? You mean Hem & Hadley? She was his "buddy" besides being his wife - she understood (& tolerated)his many moods.
Thanks for the visit Jodee - ah yes, an angel...........

I love Hemingway's and Hadley's relationship in AMF. Too bad it didn't last!

Hello Kate, I agree, they are inseparable, I think.
