Ernest and Hadley liked to get out of the damp cold of Paris in the winter for the clean air of alpine Switzerland and Austria.
They'd rent a cabin or find a hotel to use as a base camp to ski and hike from.
Ernest always ended up with skin browned by the high altitude sun.
These photos were taken in Gstaad, Switzerland in 1927.
Curious, because even living in poverty he could afford to go to the snow when there was too cold in Paris. Those were really different times.
ReplyDeleteHi Carlos,
ReplyDeleteYes, that is always a puzzle - the money that they had for trips & leisure. Fishing trips to Spain & the bullfights there are other examples.
So it has got to be fake poverty, yeah? Or selective poverty. Did skiing used to be a cheap sport, do you think?
ReplyDeleteMeg,
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to call it. They had travel money, money for the hotels or lodges and the leisure time.
Couldn't this money have been applied to better lodgings in paris?
I wanna go to Austria someday...Sound Of Music right? ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Ame, yes Austria, & then they moved to Vermont, if I remember right.
ReplyDeleteYep that's me in the picture. It is truly a fantastic place to be. My favourite beach here in Brazil
ReplyDeleteSurpriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiise!
ReplyDeleteYa never know where I'll pop up!

Ame, I hope you are having fun on vacation :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog. I left you information there on the camera lenses that I use. Thank you for coming.
ReplyDeleteYes Nikon I had a good carnival. I usually travel this time of the year, but as I stayed in Rio this time I enjoyed the city and also had a chance to take some rest! Thanks for asking!
