Hemingway At The Select

As regular visitors know, I have given quite a bit of space on the blog to Paris cafe life. Hemingway and the expat crowd used the cafes as places to work, socialize, and establish a sense of community.
They also liked to drink, and after leaving Prohibition America they imbibed quite a bit in the cafes.
The Select was one of Ernest's favorite haunts. He went there for breakfast and frequently stayed to write or just catch up on the gossip.
Hemingway also put Jake Barnes and friends, from "The Sun Also Rises" at the Select.

A present day American expat, Rick Tulka, and co-author Noel Riley Fitch have written a book called "Paris cafe: The Select Crowd."
Rick has been generous enough to let me use the above illustration of Hem.
For a change of pace, I'm adding a link to a Youtube clip , so you can see the present day Select and Rick at work. I think that it is very enjoyable and I hope that you do, too.

Hey! Best wishes for 20091

Great video...it's a shame of all those cafe's, but as you can see in the video, there are no young people comming into the cafe..just doesn't appeal to them I guess.

By the way here you can see my bohemian nose...http://www.zuidpier.net/colofon/

Nice to meet you after all this time!

Great to see the new post! And the video is a treat!! For a long time I didn't had a look at Mad Magazine... But 90% less cafes in Paris, is starring...

Blogtrotter will be posting on Delhi the next weeks; lots to see… Hope you like it and wish you a great weekend!

I've drunk in the Select. Your post fills me with an emotional uprising. This Spring, perhaps, it is time to go again. But of course, you know, I am enamored of the Cafe Life. C'est la vie.

Spectacular. I loved the video! If I didn't love beaches so much, my choice definitely would be Paris. Perhaps I should make some changes, but MN winters are not easily tolerated by me and DH anymore.

I have seem a number of Paris cafe books, but I think I'll look for this one now. I love the drawings; how did you get permission? You are a clever man!! Thanks for this wonderful post!!

Hello Kate,
Rick discovered my blog & we started to email back and forth - he told me about the book & when I saw the sketch of Hem, I had to ask if I could use it! He was gracious enough to say "no problem."

Excellent to have a post on Rick!
How appropriate.
If only Rick was around in Hemingway's time...
That would be the best...
