This is Hemingway with a bull in the Summer of 1927. The photo was taken outside of Pamplona, Spain, a town that was recommended to Hemingway by Gertrude Stein. It is in Northern Spain, just South of the French border. The famous "running of the bulls" is held here every year during the Festival of San Fermin.
Pamplona and Hemingway's vacations there were the setting and inspiration for his first novel, "The Sun Also Rises."

Nice post and enjoyed reading it.
Some of my crazier friends have returned from running with the bulls and brought me a red scarf, too. Some people don't know how to act their age I guess!!
he looks so happy being photographed with the bull...i have never witnessed the bloody sport with my own eyes but one day will like to , to see how gory it really gets ...
Thanks for visiting, everyone. Moi, yes he does look happy - so does the bull :)
Is it me?
Or is that bull's toupe' just a little off-center?!?
MATCHES!!!
=)))
xo
Ame, dear, I think that is Hem's beret!
LOL
xo :)
MATCHES!!
You are very observant Ame - it has slightly slipped to one side. Looks rather ostentatious for a bull. I think his head gear is already over-the-top!!!
Pamplona's San Fermin is so famous probably because of Papa's "Fiesta", the Portuguese translation of "The Sun also rises"... Don't remember ever seeing this picture! Great job.
thanks for your visit and comment to Blogtrotter.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting on the colt. They are not sure yet if it will be lame. I will try and keep everyone updated on my blog.
Seeing both of them so relaxed here makes me wonder what unspeakable things they do to a bull before a fight, to get him so enraged!
Sorry, but I hate bullfighting!
And don't even get me started on Vick...
I enjoyed reading your post. Although I hate bullfighting, I must say this "running of the bulls" (largadas as we call it in Portugal) it’s a bit more fare to the bulls. You just gave me a me good idea to my vacations: I’ll try to see the “The Sun Also Rises”. I cable channel broadcasted it several months ago and I recorded it but haven’t had the chance to see it yet.
Shall I take it that you're a Hemingway fan? My favourite of his is the short story "Hills Like White Elephants". Melanie Griffith and James Woods starred in a movie with the same title. Obviously, the short story was better!

Paul...I read in the papers that some time back in NY there was a contest held with regard to Hemingway, are you aware of that?
Thanks for the comments.
Isabella, I think that this bull was a bit under the weather ( read that somewhere).
I couldn't go to a bullfight either.
Hello Shionge - could that have been the look-alike contest in Key West, Florida?
That was just a few days ago.
wow this blog was just sooooooo greattt...thanks for visiting my blog too.
You should have started this blog years ago when I was teaching at uni. Would have been a wonderful resource for my students :)

Hey...thanks for the email I'll write soon :D
Bull fight..."running of the bulls"...thease words related to Spain..It is very dangerous game i saw in television...nice photo
Hiya Sweet Paul, thank you for your kind thoughts & well-wishes :D Got them! Went through the nerve-wrecking surgery and I'm resting now. Catch up soon!
Great to hear that, Shionge!!
Did they give you funny little foam rubber slippers? :)
I simply don't understand both: bullfighting and "run of the bulls" and I'd find more exciting a viola quartet.
LOL, Fabrizio, well, running of the bulls is just a way to let the men look macho once a year.
(Although it must take a certain amount of courage/alcohol to do it.)
Hiya Paul, I'm back dancing and just wanna thank you for your kind thoughts :D Nope, no rubber foam but shower cap - yes! kekeke..
They knew how to live then. They probably had little care in the world but live, write and love.
Wish I could do that instead of chasing after a ball of yarn like a cat.
Referring to Hemingway Ming has given voice to my thought about him and thank you Paul about these photo and news about what he concerns !!!
Thank you Ming for visiting, & Fabrizio for returning & to Shionge for getting healthy again!
Enjoyed with nice photo.........THE BULL FIGHTER.....

Just dropping by to say Hi! :) How are you doing? xoxoxo
I wonder if Hemingway joined the "bull-running contest"? lol. We have "bulls crossing the road" at some place in Malaysia. LOL. So we've got be careful when driving on some particular roads.
Dropping by to say Hi Paul :D
Nikon, please contact me via email through the form at the bottom of my blog :)Please!!!! Take care xoxoxo
Hi, Kisses from Uruguay.
Heminway is one of my favorite writers. In my blog I have a story of him. Shortest the world you know It?
In my blog to the right is a button translator, to facilitate the reading. Greetings. I hope to you
Hello P, I'm following on the heels of the dos uruguaianas to say that regarding the macho thing with the bull runs, here in Siberia, it is twice a year, plus a new offshoot in Carnaval week to indoctrinate the kids with a wooden "practice" bull....so pathetic, so primitive, so sad. And even if they don't kill them in the ring here, there is no record of any bull ever winning a "fight". What I can't stand is all the pretence about "art", dignity, bla-bla-bla. Why can't they just admit that they love the sight & smell of blood - the bull's, the men's, the horses'?
I was just scrolling down the list to visit here when your mail arrived. Our new buzz-word has to be "Ulysses", right?
Our arenas need far more courage than the bullring, be assured!
"Ulysses" it is :)
I AM DEFINATELY IMPROVINGB :)
Hey Nikon, no new posts coming? ;)
Yo Paul..you're single but I bet love still matters ;)
Ah Shionge! yes, I agree, but it's a case of "the one that got away."
I've been waiting for a replacement........:)
Hahahha....wish you luck and find true love soon ;)
This is a lovely idea to have a blog on Hemingway and the pics are so nice.
Paul, Kate here again! I have a book which I found in a used book store--the kind that I haunt, which you would find interesting. It was published in 1989, and altho it's not that old, it's probably out-0f-print. It's called A Guide to Hemingway's Paris with Walking Tours by John Leland. The photos are black and white, and I know you'd enjoy the book. I have a shelf full of Paris books, almost all of which I get at used book stores.
Hello Kate - thanks for visiting & keeping me in mind.
I sent you an e-mail :)
;o]
I love these old photos of Hemingway posing with "wild" animals!
